A propos de l'auteur

Henry James naît à New York en 1843. Petit-fils d'Irlandais, il grandit dans une famille aisée et, dès sa jeunesse, il se déplace entre l'Europe et l'Amérique et lit les classiques de la littérature anglaise, américaine, française et allemande. Par la suite, après des années de voyages en Europe, il décide en 1878 de s'installer en Angleterre, à Londres. À cette époque, il écrit ses chefs-d'œuvre, dans lesquels le thème de l'opposition entre innocence américaine et sophistication européenne est récurrent (notamment dans Les Européens, 1878, Washington Square, 1880, Les Bostoniennes, 1886, et Reverberator, 1888).Entre 1902 et 1904, il écrit ses derniers grands romans, dont : Les Ailes de la colombe, Les Ambassadeurs et La Coupe d'or.
Il meurt à Londres en 1916, après avoir obtenu la nationalité britannique.
